Malabar has a world-wide reputation for its beautiful collections of unique furnishing fabrics – handloom fabrics in vibrant colours and textures, embroideries, appliqués, sheers, silks, chenilles and velvets, complemented by a palette of 105 paint colours designed to work with the fabric collections and Malabar’s China Grass wallpapers, a range of textured papers using natural grasses. The scope of the fabric collections ranges from decorating basics – plain cottons in an extensive range of colours, stripes and check - to chenilles designed for robust contract use and complicated silk jacquards with large repeats, ideal for big design statements.
The company was founded by Peter Sterck who was struck by the beauty and variety of the fabrics being made in Kerala, in south west India. For twenty years, he has worked closely with the weaving co-operatives in the area, whose spinners, dyers and weavers use their time honoured skills handed down from generation to generation to create Malabar’s inspirational and distinctive fabrics for use in interiors around the world today.
Malabar has stockists worldwide, from leading interior design showrooms in the USA to well-known retailers such as Liberty, Heal’s and the John Lewis Partnership in the UK. The full Malabar collection can also be viewed at our showroom in London, just south of the River Thames at Clapham. Samples can be ordered through any of our stockists and distributors, from our showroom or directly through the website.
